Expressive style of dance that utilizes creativity

If you are looking to sign up for an expressive style of dance that utilizes creativity, emotions, and unconventional moves, then our contemporary dance classes are the right choice for you! Our contemporary classes use aspects of other dance forms such as ballet, modern, hip hop and jazz. Learn how to incorporate elements such as unpredictability and abstract storytelling into your dance. Originating in the 1950’s, contemporary dance began with ballet dancers who were fed up with the rigidity of ballet’s technique, and the restraints is caused on their self-expression. Dancers stopped focusing on perfect posture, and experimented with moving from their core, manipulating their training, and trying new ideas such as floorwork, falling and recovery. Contemporary dance is a blend off both classical ballet, and also modern dance. The three dancers who were most influential in founding contemporary dance were Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Lester Horton in New York City.

Contemporary dance is about being unpredictable, changing speed, rhythm and direction, and allowing for creative freedom. Contemporary dance gained an astounding amount of popularity after the airing of the worldwide phenomenon of, So You Think You Can Dance. Many would argue that some of the best dances ever performed on the show were contemporary dances, choreographed by amazing artists like Mia Michaels and Travis wall. Contemporary dance was designed to make even the most complex and technical moves, look effortless. Our classes start with a thorough warm up that builds foundational hip hop moves and strengthens your technique. The combination of stretch and strength can vary between teachers. After the warm up we go across the floor practicing basic contemporary moves, you will also do exercises to help create your own moves based on whatever background dance style you have, and you will learn how to express yourself in unique new moves. The class ends with choreography where sequences are put together to practice musicality and performance skills.
